FRANCK MULLER WATCHES HISTORY

When one looks at watches they are aware of the story that each watch has, the design element and what’s behind the dial, the face of the watch, mechanical parts that come together to make the movement. After all, the watch is with us throughout our lives on a daily basis – our pleasurable moments, our highlights and our lows. It’s our friend for a lifetime. We very much like for people to understand that it’s not just a basic object, a nonentity that we wear on our wrists throughout the day. The watch has character and it’s a work of art that is beautiful and is to be enjoyed. A lot of time and passion and hardships go into creating something that is beautiful and practical -- enjoy your watch." --- Franck Muller

It’s hard to comprehend the precision that goes into watch making if you aren't mechanically inclined --- gears and springs have to wield a certain amount of force, minute parts must align exactly to activate other parts. Most who know of Franck Muller's watches also know of his precision and how it has led to 22 of what he terms "world premieres"- pieces which demonstrate feats and include elements never seen before in the history of watch making. The amazing thing is that he does it all in his head. His forte is his ability to visualize everything-- the dimensions, the parts, how everything will come together-- without putting it on paper. At one time, all the pieces he made were one-of-a-kind simply because there was no paperwork documenting them. He imagined a piece and built it.

Most everyone in the watch world knows Franck Muller by reputation despite his relatively short career. What kind of person could move past "upstart" status among Geneva watchmakers to become a "master"? When asked to describe himself, Muller chooses three words: passionate, inventive and determined.

Therein lies a stroke of self-realization. Inventors have all been characterized b their ability to see past what can be called the tyranny of the present. An inventive mind can surpass the status quo, realize that present patterns, methods, and machinations are only employed because no one has yet discovered a better way to carry out a task. Creative minds know there are few things that have been perfected, and they recognize the difference between tradition and utility. In the strictest sense of the word, Franck Muller can truly define himself as an inventor, and seems to be on his way to becoming as prolific as Edison.

Besides the vision, he has the optimism to keep on creating. just this year, Muller "improved" a piece already considered the most complicated watch in the world. Presented in 1992, the piece boasted a grande and petite sonnerie, minute repeater for the hours, quarters and minutes, perpetual calendar programmed to the year 2100 with monthly retrograde equation, a leap-year cycle, a 24-hour moon phase indicator, and an indicator of the internal temperature of the mechanism. The watch became a world premiere again in 1995 when Muller's patented tourbillon was added, and this year it became the brand's first world premiere of 1998. The 1998 watch features a chronograph with 60-minute counter and power reserve for the chime and movement.

Muller and his watch making house produce at least one world premiere every year and have done so since 1986 (except 1988). The introduction of the free oscillating tourbillon with jumping hours demonstrated his new perspective on tourbillon construction. The Calibre 94, 1994's world premiere, incorporated some 350 parts an was the culmination of three years' research. The Endurance 24 with split-seconds chronograph, the 1997 world premiere, even became the official watch of the Le Mans Race (although the Franck Muller racing team McLaren Number 53 didn't fare as well as the watch).

Sometimes a client's request spurs Muller to create a world premiere, and such was the case with the Master Banker. The triple time zone watch was created in response to a special request from a banker in London. "It's a challenge to invent something that no one has done in all the years watch making has been in existence," says Muller.

Many of the world premieres incorporate his patents; the most famous, of course, is for his tourbillon, which amazes watchmakers and jewelers with its alignment of the balance wheel axis and fourth wheel. The double jumping hour with a two time zones function and the double face chronograph show Muller's refusal to remain satisfied with previous inventions. He acquired patents for both innovations, along with the striking mechanism indicator which protects wearers of repeater watches from damaging their mechanisms: until the hand on the indicator dial is still, the wearer must not activate the striking mechanism again. The most inventive patent is that for the retrograde seconds complication. With this feature, the minutes can be followed with the sweep of a second hand on a graduated section on the dial. This unique display method's mechanical ingenuity is also evident when at the end of a minute, the indicator hand snaps back to its starting point.

The genius of Muller watches is in their movements. All the movements are mechanical, produced with either manual or self-winding mechanisms and are regulated to different temperatures and positions.
